A Solo Doc's Journey to EHR and the OFFICE OF THE FutureGregg Alexander, DO, a solo pediatrician from London, Ohio, is the first Medicaid recipient of federal incentive money in the state. That's because he was already using EHRs long before the federal program began in 2009. Dr. Alexander gave a presentation to The Partnership's Physician Associations Advisory Council on his journey through the use of electronics in his practice, as well as his ergonomic pediatric office. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Health Information Partnership and also serves on various committees. As a practicing physician, he gives great advice in communications to the Advisory Council as members discuss how to reach doctors with the latest news and information.A prolific columnist and writer with a dry wit, Dr. Alexander put this video together himself. An admitted tech geek, he's also a great pediatrician who's passionate about creating the "best rural pediatric office in America." Watch this video. It's great fun and gives you wonderful ideas on electronic health record use, telecomunications, website development and office design. You'll enjoy his sense of humor and commitment to children and medicine. View the video on our site. Don't Miss This Video ON HIE in ActionDr. Herbert Schumm of St. Rita's Medical Center and Jolene Joseph of Health Partners of Western Ohio in Lima are just two of the administrators and staff you'll meet in this video that chronicles December 15, 2011. St. Rita's is the first hospital in Ohio to go live on the CliniSync HIE and also the first in the nation to exchange Direct, secure messaging based on ONC standards across state lines to Mississippi. Dr. Schumm says it's amazing that two physicians with disparate EHR systems can "talk" with one another both in the Lima area and across state lines. "We've taken baby steps, but very important steps in exchange. And I think the story is these providers are family docs just like everybody else. But with the help of the people who pulled this together and the community, they can accomplish this." Dr. Herbert Schumm, VP of Medical Affairs, St. Rita's Medical Center |

Trying to navigate through meaningful use requirements? Talk to practice managers and experts on how to make MU easier. |
Having trouble navigating through meaningful use? Tell us about it.We're listening. We'd like to know if you’re encountering any problems with achieving meaningful use so that we can talk with our federal partners about how to break down any barriers that hospitals and physician practices might be experiencing. Because the Ohio Health Information Partnership is the nonprofit organization responsible to the Office of the National Coordinator of HIT for assisting physicians in adopting EHRs and reaching meaningful use, we’ve created a short survey so you can provide your feedback. It should only take you five minutes to complete. We appreciate your assistance and hope we can help solve any hurdles you’re experiencing with MU in Ohio. Feb. 29 Last Day to Attest for 2011 Medicare MUJust a reminder from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services:The reporting year ended for eligible professionals (EP) who participated in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program in 2011. What does this mean? For participating EPs, they must have completed their 90-day reporting period by the end of 2011. However, EPs have until Wednesday, February 29, 2012 to actually register and attest to meeting meaningful use to receive an incentive payment for CY2011 through the Medicare & Medicaid EHR Incentive Program Registration and Attestation System. |
Medicity Gets Patent for HIEThe company that created the technological infrastructure for the statewide CliniSync HIE is Medicity, which just received a patent for its health information exchange technology. Medicity received the patent for its secure and effective identification of electronic patient health records. An exciting aspect of the technology is that not all of the data has to be stored in one large repository. Instead, the patient records and results can be searched for by an authorized physician, and the records will come in real time to that doctor so he or she can view them. Original records can remain at the source. Ohio's community-based model, CliniSync, is an HIE solution that will work well for our state. Medicity also works with state-designated organizations in Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Mississippi and Vermont as well as a private HIE, Michigan's HealthConnect. Medicity connects more than 750 hospitals, 125,000 physicians and some 250,000 end users. To read more about the patent, go to |
